Peter Kien died in Auschwitz aged 25. The play unfolds against a background ot terror, tragedy and the flowering of art under oppression.

The Windmill is based on the life of Czech-Jewish artist/librettist Peter Kien whose opera Emperor of Atlantis was the only one to emerge from the concentration camps. Helga, his lover from Terezin (a showcase camp set up for the benefit of the Red Cross), returns to the camp to confront her past. Gloria Tessler is Peter Kien’s second cousin.
